Interview: Şener Yılmaz Aslan
Please tell us a little bit about the H-art Collective?
H-art Collective was formed by Sevil Alkan and Emrullah Eyvallah in 2014 to collaborate, cooperate and create joint projects in the field of mobile photography. We aim to produce and present unique, original and innovative works of mobile photography.
Can we meet the team?
We all live in Istanbul.
Sevil Alkan, an architect, started to take photos in 2013 with a mobile device, and today she mainly works in the field of Mobile Street and Documentary Photography field. She and her fellow photographers formed the H-Art Collective, a Mobile Street Photography Collective in 2014.
Güney Tepe is a freelance photographer who is also involved in music.
İlknur Can worked for a number of banks for many years, and now she is freelancing as a photographer.
Emrullah Eyvallah works for a private company, and finally Gökhan Değirmenci is a freelance photographer.
What makes photography mobile? Which photographs are mobile, and which aren’t? Why the need for such distinction?
The word “mobile” here can be somewhat confusing but in fact mobile photography simply means content created using your cell phone’s camera. We get this question a lot. So doesn’t the fact that other cameras are mobile mean their photography is also mobile? The reasons for such a distinction include the technological strategies and marketing purposes. Cell phone brands for example highlight the models’ camera specifications in their promotions. Offering a good camera feature is a good reason to prefer a certain model of cell phone. So, photos taken by cell phones are mobile photography, and the only difference is the device you use.
Do you think there is interest in mobile photography in Turkey, and do you get feedback from your followers?
We can say that there is growing interest. We get feedback from followers, and we usually engage with them on instagram. We also invite users that we find successful to share their photos for a week.
As a team, do you use only your mobile phones or do you also work with other equipment?
Each photographer under the collective’s umbrella posts only mobile photographs but we may use other gadgets and equipment for personal works.
Some readers may want to know, which mobile apps do you use?
Most of us use the camera apps Hipstamatic, Oggl, and ProCamera, and editing apps Snapseed and VSCO
And for those who are into mobile photography, which local and international social media accounts should be followed?
We would recommend following Elif Gülen and Engin Güneysu from Turkey and Outofthephone and Hikari Creative internationally.
